How to Select the Right Car Battery

You do not know how much you need a good battery until your current battery fails you when you need it the most. Car batteries do not have an infinite lifespan. They do wear out and become defective. At this point it becomes almost impossible to start your car. To ensure you get the most from your battery you need to know how to maintain and identifying the right battery for your car.

Types of Batteries

Lead Acid Battery

This is one of the most car batteries. It uses a system of electrolyte solution to generate electricity to power up the car. There has being more improvements in the design in the lead acid battery. For one you do not need to constantly refill it with liquid. They are also low maintenance.

In fact, you do not even need to keep removing the battery caps. A simple refill with distilled water helps the battery handle a variety of climatic conditions. The biggest benefit with the lead acid battery is that they are cost effective when compare with the absorbed glass matt (AGM).

The other downside to having a lead acid battery is that the terminals do get corroded over time. This leads to them developing a whitish paste on the terminals. When this happens it reduces power to your car. Brushing off the corrosion with baking soda or coke will clear out the whitish substance.

Absorbed Glass Matt (AGM)

The interstate batteries belong to this class of batteries. You have better chances in recycling them and last longer. The batteries are fuel saving but cost up to 100% more than the lead acid batteries. Another benefit of using them is they do not lose charge as easily as the lead acid ones. This means you can use them for that car that you drive occasionally.

Battery Maintenance

Having a battery that is low on charge is distressing. It can leave you stranded in the middle of nowhere if you can’t find another motorist to jump start your car. A typical car battery lasts around five years.

This time periods can differ depending on your climatic conditions. Instead of waiting for your car to fail one day, you should take precautions to have your battery tested by a certified mechanic.

Most motorists will use a voltmeter to test the battery voltage. Ideally, a good battery should have a charge of 12.6 volts, anything less than this and you may start having car problems.

Since cars have varying needs it is imperative that you select the right battery for your car. You can first begin be getting this specifications from your car manual. When purchasing a new battery ensure that it comes with a warranty. This allows you to return it incase it does not perform as expected.

Most of the warranties cover a period of 24 months. The warranty is split into two – free replacement and prorated period. For the free replacement it means you will be reimbursed with a new battery if the current one malfunctions within a period of 24 months.

The prorated period means you get partial reimbursement for a certain period. You will need to read the terms of the lease to know what is permissible. Improper battery operation or installation will render the warranty null and void.

When selecting the right battery you need to make sure it properly fits your car battery port. It is dangerous driving a car with a wobbling battery. You should also ensure you get the right terminals.

Most of the time you experience the starter not engaging one of the culprits is often having the wrong terminals in place. Battery terminals should be good conductors of electricity. In the States most battery sellers will test for you the battery performance under different climatic conditions.

In this case they will cool the batteries to temperatures below 0 degrees and then observe how they perform. Another measure is the reserve capacity. This shows you how long the car can continue operating if the stator, alternator and rotors fail. It will also measure how fast you can start your car with the headlights left on for a long time.

Make sure you checkout other top quality batteries on the market like Duralast, AGM and Optima batteries. All of these are good quality and reliable batteries.

Conclusion

Interstate batteries are the new craze in town. The batteries while pricier than the lead acid batteries offer more power while having good recycling properties. Interstate the company producing the batteries has built a solid reputation producing high quality batteries.

The firm’s commitment to operating through biblical principles has enabled them to offer unrivaled customer service. The batteries are durable and have low maintenance costs. You do not have to worry about corroded terminals like in the case of the lead acid batteries. However, the company has some improvements they need to make when it comes to honoring warranties.
