Testing & Review Methodology
Last updated: 24 July 2026
Every fault guide, cost estimate, and buying recommendation on MotorBeast follows the same research process. We do not guess. We do not rewrite press releases. We verify.
Our Sources
- Owner forums and communities — PistonHeads, SpeakEV, model-specific Facebook groups, owner clubs. We read hundreds of real owner experiences to identify failure patterns, mileages, and costs.
- Technical Service Bulletins (TSBs) — Manufacturer-issued documents that dealers use. These confirm known faults, recommended fixes, and sometimes hidden warranty extensions.
- Independent garage and specialist interviews — Mechanics who fix these failures daily, not salespeople who sell the cars. We ask what fails, what it costs, and what the dealer won’t offer.
- Parts supplier pricing — Euro Car Parts, GSF Car Parts, main dealer parts counters, breaker yards. We verify real replacement costs, not estimates.
- Consumer media — Daily Mail, Auto Express, Honest John, Which? Car, and consumer rights coverage. We track which faults make headlines and which manufacturers try to bury.
- YouTube technical channels — Independent mechanics showing actual failures, diagnostic procedures, and repair processes. We verify claims against real footage.
- Insurance and salvage data — Write-off thresholds, common claim types, and which failures total cars.
Our Process
- Identify the fault — Is this a design flaw or wear and tear? Does it affect one model or an entire engine range?
- Verify the failure mechanism — How does it fail? What are the early symptoms? What happens if ignored?
- Research real repair costs — Main dealer, independent specialist, DIY (if possible), and breaker yard options.
- Find non-dealer solutions — Can an independent fix it? Is there a conversion or workaround? What does the dealer not tell you?
- Check for manufacturer action — TSBs, recalls, warranty extensions, class actions, or “goodwill” programs.
- Write the guide — Plain English, no jargon, with clear warnings and actionable advice.
- Update regularly — Car faults evolve. New TSBs appear. Costs change. We revisit our guides every 6 months minimum.
What We Don’t Do
- We do not test cars ourselves — we are not a test facility. We aggregate and verify real-world data.
- We do not accept manufacturer access or press cars. No advertising from car brands.
- We do not publish unverified rumours. If we can’t confirm a fault through multiple sources, we don’t cover it.
- We do not recommend products we haven’t researched. Affiliate links are disclosed and secondary to genuine usefulness.
