Choosing a car may not always be as simple as it sounds. There are multiple options to consider when making your decision. Simply finding an alternative that looks attractive or offers a cost-effective price range might leave you with more future expenses than it’s worth.

One of the primary differences you will come across when looking for a suitable alternative is choosing between manual and automatic transmissions. The latter represents the latest of the two options, and as such, is seen as the most logical solution for your modern vehicular needs.

However, there are numerous manufacturers offering automatic transmissions with their vehicles, thus choosing one might not always be as straightforward as you would assume.

In today’s modern world, buying a vehicle with a manual transmission might not be an advisable investment to consider. Driving a stick-shift used to be seen as something that a father would teach their son, or as the epitome of someone who knows everything about cars.

However, the progress experienced in the automobile industry has led to the gradual phasing out of manual clutches for better alternatives. If you’re planning on acquiring a car today, choosing one with an automatic transmission offers the best chance of enjoying a stable form of longevity.

Setting your sights on an automatic transmission is just the first step in the decision-making process when choosing a car. There are tons of alternatives available in the market, but not every option might suit your particular needs.

Before delving into the nitty-gritty of things, however, you first need to identify a reliable manufacturer of automatic vehicles. With this in mind, I have taken the liberty of listing what I feel are currently the best alternatives available in this category. Going through these choices may help you set a stable foundation for your overall search.

Some of the most reliable automatic transmission cars in the market today include:

  1. Smart Fortwo Twinamic

Although these vehicles were not initially renowned for their automatic transmissions, the German manufactures have included an additional option in their latest design in the form of a dual-clutch transmission. This six-speed transmission is available with the manufacturer’s 71 horsepower alternative.

Though you won’t win the Grand Prix with this vehicle, it’s still a great option for those looking to enhance the smoothness of their ride.

Its dual-clutch design also allows users to choose between manual or full transmission options, which means that you can enjoy the best of both worlds should you not be ready to fully make the change to automatic transmission vehicles. The DTC option comes at an extra cost, but the quality enjoyed arguably makes the extra expense worthwhile.

  1. The Hyundai i10

Hyundai has been known to produce good value for money when it comes to their cars, and the i10 model is no different. The vehicle features great interior space considering its size and offers sufficient comfort for long rides.

It’s a great option for individuals residing within the city, and it’s still pretty comfortable when going over rough roads. Although it originally came with a manual gearbox, the manufacturers have enhanced the design of this latest model by offering a four-speed automatic alternative.

The cost of this alternative is cheaper when compared to other producers offering similar options – but it still provides great value for money. The car comes with a particularly absorbent suspension that can soak up the bumps and jolts present with rougher terrain.

  1. Renault Zoe

If you’re looking for an electric alternative with the purchase of your AV, then the Renault Zoe is an ideal solution for your needs. Its compact design makes it an excellent option for maneuvering around the city – and the latest design comes with a battery range of over 200 miles, as stated by official reports.

Its regenerative braking technology allows you to recharge the battery with energy that would usually be lost when coming to a stop.

You can travel significant parts of your journey using just one pedal by switching to the “B” driving mode that enhances the regenerative braking force collected when easing off the accelerator. Its system also offers more adept absorption of shock from obstacles such as expansion joints and large potholes.

  1. Audi A1

The Audi A1 is an excellent alternative for those looking for a little class with their automatic solution. The vehicle offers a wide range of alternatives to their consumers when it comes to engines, with a majority of these options encompassing a DSG automatic gearbox.

Choosing the right solution in this category, such as the Sport Trim or SE models allows you to handle rougher terrains with enhanced comfort due to the 16” wheels and standard dynamic suspension applied. Damping control is also included in the design, which allows for a smooth transition over speed bumps, crests, and long-wave dips.

  1. Volkswagen Polo DSG

This model comes equipped with 7-speed DSG that makes it great to handle. These transmissions have so far demonstrated excellent longevity since their introduction, with its automatic transmission exhibiting sharp and responsive shifts in gear.

The availability of optional paddles mounted on the steering wheel allows the driver more control for those who would more involvement in the transitions by manually shifting the ratios available.

Those who would like a little more power with their vehicle can opt for the 1.2 liter TSI engine alternative when selecting this solution, enhancing the performance available at faster speeds. The gearbox comes equipped with a duo of dry clutches that don’t require any cooling to function. The inclusion of a DSG transmission also enhances the fuel economy enjoyed from a long drive.

  1. Ford Fiesta 1.0

Ford has built a reputation for producing reliable cars, and the fiesta series is no different. The latest version comes with a power shift automatic gearbox, which works wonders when combined with a 1 liter EcoBoost engine.

Its three-cylinder engine comes with a 5-speed gearbox t a supple suspension and tailored gearing that enhances the smoothness of the ride. Its chassis improves the power steering available, which allows for increased involvement during driving. It reaches a high speed of 112mph, which is pretty impressive for vehicles in this smaller category.

The latest model also includes an Active City Stop auto brake system, which is a new introduction to this series. Settings such as the maximum speed and traction control can be altered by a personalized key on offer with the vehicle.

In conclusion, there are numerous options available in the market when it comes to automatic transmissions. However, this doesn’t mean that any alternative will be suitable for your needs.

There are a couple of issues that you will need to consider when making your decision. The nature of the region where you will conduct a majority of your driving, for instance, is an important issue to take into consideration.

If you happen to be operating in mostly rough terrain, then finding an option with a larger engine (1.2 – 1.4 liters) could enhance the smoothness you will be able to enjoy with a ride.

It should also be noted that some alternatives come with two options, i.e., manual and automatic – so you have to be specific about your wants when making your purchase. Issues such as carbon emissions are another issue to be considered to maintain the overall preservation efforts of the environment.
